Item 483594 ◊ January 23, 1845, Yarmouth Register & Barnstable Co. Weekly Advertiser, Massachusetts
Rare and interesting, "January 23, 1845, Yarmouth Register & Barnstable Co. Weekly Advertiser,  Massachusetts."   Printed and Published by W. S. Fisher & Co.  in Yarmouth Port every Thursday evening.   The issue offered here is dated January 30, 1845,  and it  is designated "Vol. IX / No. 6.   This Edition contains 4 pages and  measures approximately 24.75” x 18”.  Their logo is a ship with sails billowing and the name "Cape Cod" on the stern.
This engrossing journal is published to provide important news and pertinent advertising from Yarmouth Port, Barnstable County, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and all over the North East.  One might find a poem decrying slavery, advice about hunting or a good marriage. Probably at least 25% of the newspaper is simply comprised of advertising … which is a real hoot, let me tell you … and a real history lesson.
The content of this particular edition includes several bits of new and gossip, and stories sent in by amateur and professional authors, such as "Too Late" by Joseph B Chandler, "Death of the First Born," and "Tale of the Seas" by Rev. J. S. C. Abbott.   Naturally there are articles from Congress and the Massachusetts State Legislature, plus a poem decrying Slavery.  There is an article about Vocal music being added to the state curriculum by the first State Superintendent of Schools.   But there is also local news as well, such as marine news, news about a duel, meetings for municipalities on the cape, Death announcements, and announcements for property for sale,  and for new businesses opening on the Cape.   And no newspaper would be complete with out it's ads.  There's ads for quack medicine right next to an ad for a tombstone.  There are death announcement, and ads Dry Goods, for homes, and land for sale, and an ad for Maritime Insurance, a "touching story,"  ad for tombstones, a dentist, dry goods, drugs and medicines, and a provisions store, and Nails.   Plus lots, lots more.
Please note you will be receiving the newspaper folded as shown in eights.   That is how we received it, and we don't want make any changes.
This very unique and fascinating local Cape Cod Newspaper is in good but very fragile condition.   It is complete, and the surfaces are clean.   But  has a bit of edge wear and wear and holes at the intersections where the horizontal and vertical folds meet.  We have repaired several of the holes with archival tape, because we were worried about the structural integrity of the newspaper.   There is the name of a previous owner at the tome of the newspaper.   Considering that this newsprint is more than 170 years old, it is actually amazing that it has survived this long.  Please see all photos above and below to confirm the condition of this newspaper.
A rare and fascinating "January 30, 1845, Yarmouth Register & Barnstable Co. Weekly Advertiser,  Massachusetts," and a fantastic addition to any Library or Collection!!!!!
