Huichol Mexican Indian folk art is truly unique and all handmade by the indigenous people of the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico.  Beautiful, multi-colored glass beaded and large carved gourd prayer bowl.  Prayer bowls are carried by the Shaman in religious ceremonies.  It is thought that power and strength is given to those that hold it.  The larger size of this prayer bowl is rare in Huichol beaded art and unique with the exterior carving.  Using the traditional Huichol techniques of hand carving a design, pressing Campeche beeswax into this gourd and adding, one-by-one, micro glass beads this gorgeous bowl depicts the offering message and prayers of the Shaman.
Graduated green colors of glass beads frame the edge and symbolize the earth, the heavens and growth.
In the center, a large Father Sun who brings light to the world has Prayer Arrow sun rays in yellow, red, orange and adobe colors.  5 extra large symbols protect Father Sun:  A candle to light the way to the Peyote ceremony, the all seeing God's Eye symbol for protection, a large stalk of corn nourished by blue rain and a scorpion protecting a rainbow colored Peyote flower.
The back is hand carved with spirit animals and birds.  The hand carving is breathtaking.  The artist skinned, cleaned and dried the gourd and then designed 3D images; Profile parrot, an owl, a hawk protecting the Peyote from a snake and the Messenger Deer to the Gods sending prayers.  All animals protecting and free amongst the Peyote cactus leaves.  We love how the artist used the natural texture of the gourd in his carvings.
