    Description

Huichol Beaded Sacred Prayer Bowl Handmade Mexican Folk Art Sea Shell 7"W
Huichol Mexican Indian folk art is truly unique and all handmade by the indigenous people of the Sierra Madre mountains in Jalisco, Mexico.
Beautiful and hand decorated, multi-colored glass beaded abalone shell Shaman prayer bowl.  Spiritual prayer bowls are placed in shrines and sacred sites and used by the Shaman during their ceremonies.  In the Huichol culture, the Shaman are spiritual leaders who communicate with the Gods, lead ceremonies, recite divine passages, heal the sick and have supernatural powers to help the Huichol culture.
Using the traditional Huichol techniques of pressing Campeche wax onto the inside of this abalone shell and adding glass beads, one-by-one, this prayer bowl depicts the offering message to the Huichol Gods.
Absolutely gorgeous, the artist applied a resin coated surface to the abalone shell to create a smooth exterior.  This technique allows the fabulous colors to shine on the outside of the bowl.
We love how the artist let some of the abalone shell show on the inside, too.
Using varying bright multi-colored glass beads the symbols are added for offerings to the gods.  It takes the Huichol Indians hours and hours, days and days, of work to complete one piece.  In this bowl, the candles in a gourd bowl light the way to the ceremony, are surrounded by the blue sky and the Pacific Ocean and a Messenger Deer above the flames, outlined in earth colors, communicates with the Gods.  A fire colored Prayer Arrow mimics the arrows shot into the air by the Shaman during the beginning of the ceremony.  Several Peyote flowers are encouraged for growth by the salamander and aurora borealis beads indicate messages are being received by the Gods.  Finally, red, orange and yellow beaded flames and heat from the ceremony are cooled by an edge of blue rain.
