  • Condition: This auction is for a January 1950 3 Page Typewritten Letter from Shrapnel Village, Japan. It was written by the wife of a military family, Major J.W. Knott from Lafayette, Indiana. Major Knott served in WWII and was stationed in Japan in 1949, his wife and family then joined him from America. She writes to a Mrs. Phillips and apologizes for taking so long answering as the first 2 months were very hard on us as to the readjustment period we always have to go thru in a new place. She says "Now the pleasures far outweigh the inconveniences that we have. I never hope to have it so good again. I have three Japanese Housegirls that do all the work except for the grocery shopping and part of the cooking. I am trying to teach two of them how to cook and they are doing nicely. Some days I can even leave for all day and they cook for the family. After six months here I still get a thrill out of browsing around in the dirty little shops trying to buy things that are different, I have a few nice
