    Description

YOUR PURCHASE INCLUDES TWO ROOT CLUBS
    .
Blue painted handles make this pair of Penobscot root clubs extremely scarce.
Chip carved by a Maine Native American artisan from birch root burl, they probably date from the late 1920s to early 1930s (no later than early 1930s, since they have been in my family since that time).
Quality detailed painting of these two clubs indicates that they were made by the same superior craftsman.
They were most likely made as a pair, and they have never been separated.
They are painted on both the front and the back, with the some details on the back of the squaw's head
Each measures over 2 feet in length.
The chief has a longer handle with carvings both on the front and the back.
The carvings include boats, a canoe, headdress, hatchet, arrows, plants, and a bird totem.
These two clubs have been in my family for three generations. They had been gifted to my family by a Native American Penobscot, quite possibly by the maker.
Although the damage is not visible from the front, a few of the tips of the horns have been damaged or broken off on both pieces (my mother confessed to playing with them with her brother when they were children).
