ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY DESTROYER HMCS MARGAREE H49 8 X10 WITH STATS SHEET

Description

You are bidding on an 8 x 10 black and white photograph of HMCS Margaree H 49 ( ex HMS Diana ) RN D ( Defender ) Class Destroyer which served in the Royal Navy from 1932 to 1940, and was sold to the RCN in 1940.
The Margaree began her life as HMS Diana on June 12, 1931 at the Palmers Shipbuilding Yards. She was launched on June 16, 1932, and commissioned into the Royal Navy on December 20, 1932.
As the Diana she served in the Mediterranean and on the China Station. In early 1940 she returned to the UK as part of the Home Fleet. She was old to the RCN and commissioned as HMCS Margaree on September 6, 1940, as a replacement for HMCS Fraser. Tragically on October 22, 1940, while on convoy escort duty, 300 miles west if Ireland, during rough weather she collided with the M.V Port Fairy and sank with the loss of her Captain and 140 of her crew.
The photograph is undated and shows an overall waterline port beam view.
