Description
RARE! INDIAN HATCHET WITH HAMMER POLL (Ca. 1770-1820)According to Harold Peterson a “small group” of this type hatchet
when decorated like this,
would have likely been found in an Indian site
and used for tribal
purposes (American Indian Tomahawks, page 31).
The photos do not fully show the elaborate decorations.
1. The central ears (around the eye) are incised with small 1/8th inch
linear border markings. Where the ears meet the blade, a line demarcates a
border. The blade has two deeply recessed rectangular edge grooves,
and two perforated edge grooves.
2. At the base of the poll are angular "V" incised lines. The poll is chamfered,
and the hammer end is cross-hatched and shows signs of possible use.
Measures: 5 3/8 inches long (bit to tip of poll) by 3 1/8 wide (bit)
Condition: Expected minor surface wear and some erosion and rust,
but beautiful patina, eye-appeal and overall superb example.
