    Description

Vintage Huichol  Folk Art Mexican  Peyote Yarn Painting
    By Jose Benito Sanchez
    This painting  is by
    one of the pioneers of
the Huichol  early classic style. The
yarn painting of    Shaman visions  is mounted with beeswax on plywood.
    On the back of
painting are the artist’s words in Huichol,  handwritten  to describe the meaning of the  vision.
Like other early works, this painting is made with wool yarn pressed into beeswax on a wooden board .
This is a rare Vintage   early Huichol  15 x 15  Yarn painting by Jose  Benito Sanchez.
See the signature of Jose Benito Sanchez in  this  painting  and
compare to  the three other  Jose Benito Sanchez  signatures to confirm authenticity. He signed his  paintings in a flamboyant unique manner, documenting the  region of Nayarit and comunidad of Sitakua, and  usually  referred to the name given to  him
    in the Huichol
    Wixarika
    language as Yucauye Cucame,
    or
    Camionate Silencio-'"Silent Walker".
The signature on  back of this painting   from my collection  has the similar  info as the  compared three  other Sanchez.
    J
    ose Benito Sanchez
passed away in 2009  and  it is  rare to find any  of his sensational yarn paintings.    His pieces  have gone up in value since his death.  Some  feel that they are worth a considerable amount more now that he is gone.
He was undoubtably the best recognized Huichol artist.
In  good vintage condition with only light wear commensurate with age.
The Huichol Indians from Mexico  create  intricate yarn paintings,
    based on mythology.
They create the elaborate designs used in their artwork, symbolizing  health, accomplishment, good fortune  and  the spirit world ...utilizing many sacred designs.
Each yarn painting tells a story. Symbolic designs in the piece include Muwieris (healing wands; arrows), medicine baskets, the Deer God, Devil God, Singer God and the Shaman among others.
Most of the  Huichol Paintings  in my collection were purchased  circa 2002  from  Maria Von  Bolshewing, Writer and early Huichol  Collector
    or from
a local  Gallery  in  Puerto Vallarta many years ago.
