Description
ARTIFACT: This is a World War I era book entitled "e;The Story of the First Flag"e;. It is the account of the mission of Arthur Clifford Kimber who in May 1917 carried to France the first American flag authorized by the United States Government after the US joined in the Great War. Kimber, a Long Island native, was a member of the First Friends of France Unit Volunteers of Stanford University to the American Field Service as an ambulance driver, attached to Section 14, and then became a member US Air Service as a pilot with the 22nd Aero Squadron (attached to the French Escadrille Spa 85). He was only twenty-two when he was killed in action at Bantheville, France on September 26, 1918. This book was privately printed by his mother and the Friends of France in San Francisco. It is one of only about 1,000 to 2,000 copies, and still has the original dust jacket. The book opens with a facsimile of a 1917 note from President Theodore Roosevelt to Kimber, wishing him luck on his mission.VINTAGE: Circa 1920.
